Ingredients
The five ingredients in Prostacor
Saw palmetto, plant sterols, stinging nettle, pumpkin seed and lycopene share one 351 mg blend. The panel lists them by weight, heaviest first.
- 01Saw palmettoSaw Palmetto Extract (berry) (25% fatty acids)
Saw palmetto extract leads the Prostacor blend. The label names the part used, the berry, and a standard: 25% fatty acids.
- 02Beta-sitosterolPhytosterol Complex (40-45% beta sitosterol)
The second line of the blend is a phytosterol complex. The label gives its standard: 40-45% beta sitosterol.
- 03Stinging nettleStinging Nettle
Stinging nettle is the middle ingredient of the five. The label prints its name and nothing more: no plant part, no standard.
- 04Pumpkin seedPumpkin Seed
Pumpkin seed is fourth of the five ingredients, which puts it near the light end of the blend.
- 05LycopeneLycopene
Lycopene closes the list. Last place on the panel means it is the lightest of the five ingredients.
Proprietary blend
Why the panel prints one weight for five ingredients
Prostacor's panel groups its five ingredients under one name, "Prostacor Proprietary Blend", and prints one figure beside it: 351 mg. Federal labeling rules allow this.
Inside a blend the order still tells you something. Ingredients are listed from most to least by weight, so a capsule holds more saw palmetto extract than lycopene. How much more is not printed.
The Supplement Facts panel must list the serving size and number of servings per container, declare each dietary ingredient in the product, and except for dietary ingredients that are part of a proprietary blend, provide information on the amount of the dietary ingredient per serving.

Evidence
What research says about each of the five
| Ingredient | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Saw palmetto | The NIH's complementary health center reviewed the research and calls saw palmetto alone "probably not helpful" for urinary symptoms. On blends that include it, the center says no firm conclusion could be reached. | National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health |
| Beta-sitosterol | A Cochrane review of 4 trials and 519 men reported better urinary symptom scores with beta-sitosterols. The same review says long-term effectiveness and safety are not known. | Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews |
| Stinging nettle | One six-month trial of 620 patients reported a benefit, and its own author asks for more trials before anyone calls the herb effective. | Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy |
| Pumpkin seed | A one-year study of 1,431 men found pumpkin seed extract capsules did no better than placebo. Whole seed did somewhat better, and the authors want a confirming study. | Urologia Internationalis |
| Lycopene | A systematic review of 8 trials concluded that the published research can neither support nor refute lycopene for prostate conditions. | Maturitas |
